Psychotherapy
Many of the physical problems elderly individuals experience can have an effect on their emotions as well. Becoming less mobile and more dependent on other people can sometimes lead to depression. Some physical problems can directly influence an elderly individual's cognitive functions. Neurodegeneration, for example, is one of the most common causes of dementia. Memory problems can be frustrating, whether they are due to normal aging or to a degenerative disease.
Older adults also might experience a reduction in their social circles. They may be unable to leave their homes or travel to visit each other. They may begin to watch their friends and spouses pass away, which can lead to loneliness, grief, and depression. They may be dealing with end-of-life issues and other concerns common to senior adults.
Our therapists offer counseling to elderly individuals experiencing feelings of depression, frustration, anxiety, and grief. This can help make elderly adults feel better emotionally. Additionally, family therapy can help their loved ones adjust better to the changes they see.
During the initial psychotherapy session, patients are asked to describe the problem with which they are struggling, preferably have their family present to assist in reporting how they are doing, and to attempt to describe treatment goals they want to accomplish. They are asked to document their goals for discussion in future sessions. Therapy interventions may include supportive psychotherapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, and/or cognitive behavioral therapy.
We also offer a Caregiver Support Group for the caregivers of our patients.
